BalWin1 and BalWin2 - Soil science construction monitoring as part of preparatory measures

Amprion GmbH operates one of the longest extra-high-voltage grids in Germany. Amprion Offshore GmbH is specifically responsible for the construction, operation and grid connection of offshore activities. Amprion provides an overview of the entire connection concept at :

Once the wind power generated at sea has been transported to the mainland via submarine cables, it is converted into alternating current in a converter station, which can then be fed into the 380 kV grid. In order to transport the electricity via the transmission and distribution grid to the centres of consumption, it is necessary to expand the overland lines. The expansion of the overland lines is mainly carried out using underground cables.

At BalWin1 and BalWin2 These are two connection systems that feed electricity from the North Sea into our transmission grid. Amprion provides further technical background information on BalWin1 and BalWin2 here:

Commissioning of the systems is planned for 2030 and 2031. Preparatory measures are already underway to ensure a smooth construction process in the later construction phase

Preparatory measures with relevance to soil protection

The preparatory measures include in particular

  • Investigation and clearance of explosive ordnance
    - Surface detection with smaller devices
    - Borehole detection and exposure of confirmed suspected points with larger construction equipment
  • Archaeological investigations
    - Examination for potential archaeological monuments
    - Extensive interventions and dredging work

This work will be accompanied by soil scientists in the interests of precautionary soil protection.

Role of Taberg Ingenieure GmbH - Member of the SIERA Alliance

The Taberg Ingenieure GmbH - Member of the SIERA Alliance was commissioned by Amprion Offshore GmbH with the services of the Soil science construction supervision (BBB) for the planning approval sections 3, 4 and 5 (approx. 61 km route length).

In addition to the preparatory measures, the subsequent construction phase is also accompanied by Taberg in terms of soil science. The pedological tasks are carried out in close co-operation with the Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH North (Osnabrück site). This ensures continuous, competent support with sufficient personnel capacities and a local presence.

Tasks of the soil science construction supervision (BBB)

The work of the BBB includes, among other things:

1. inspection and preservation of evidence

The relevant site and soil properties are documented and assessed before the measures are started.

2. evaluation of soil moisture

Soil moisture is crucial for soil-conserving implementation.
The BBB assesses:

  • Trafficability of the floors
  • Machinability according to DIN 19639

The results are communicated to the project participants on an ongoing basis.

3. support during execution
  • Regular inspections of the work
  • Discussion of current topics in weekly construction meetings
4. final evaluation

After completion of the measures:

  • Condition assessment
  • Measurement of any unavoidable damage to the land (e.g. areas used for crops)

Outlook for the construction phase

The earthworks for the construction of the cable conduit system are to be End of 2026 begin and are supported by the Taberg Ingenieure GmbH - Member of the SIERA Alliance also accompanied by soil scientists.
